CHAPTER FOUR

I waited for a gust of wind to pass until I stepped onto the balcony. The railing was slippery and trying to wipe it dry was futile. I clung onto the frame of the sliding door as I stepped up onto the rail. One foot slid precariously as I shifted my weight to stand. I was able to reach a hand up to something stable and pull myself up, while leveraging my feet against the wall of the house. I felt my shirt catch and rip as I dragged my body onto the roof. The roof tilted upward in a gentle slope and rivers of rainwater washed down toward me.

A blast of wind hit me in the chest as I rose to my knees almost toppling me backwards, so I stayed crouched all fours and started my scramble along the roof. It was slow going to reach the far end of the house but soon enough, I crouched above her balcony. The roof peak was higher there and the distance to the railing looked far beyond my reach. The only way down was to lower myself over the edge and drop onto the terrace itself. It was a long fall and I was worried about the impact on my bare feet. I could have turned back but I decided to make the jump.

I crawled on my belly toward the edge of the roof until I could roll one leg and then the other over the edge. I tested the metal ledge for strength and hung on, inching myself backward until I could go no further without letting myself drop. I took a few deep breaths and pushed off. My body swung heavily and I struggled to lower it slowly it until my arms were fully extended. The balcony deck looked impossibly far down but I took a deep breath and let go, landing hard on the heels of my feet. I reeled and stumbled backward and tried to roll to absorb the impact. Then I lay on the cold wet patio for a moment while I caught my breath. I was bruised and scraped but in one piece. My heart was racing now, as fast as the wind that whipped against my body. The bedroom was dark and I could hear nothing over the storm. I didn’t know what to do, whether I should knock or simply go inside. Suddenly, the whole thing seemed crazy.

I gathered my wits and tiptoed in quietly, and paused to let my eyes adjust to the dark. The room was larger than the other, with thick white pile carpet that felt luxuriously warm on my aching frozen feet. The bed looked larger too, and inside it was the still figure of Cleo. I couldn’t tell if she was asleep or not, her eyes were covered with a sleeping mask. I realized at that point that I had a way out; I could unlock her bedroom door and return to my room. Any sound I made would be muffled by the storm outside.
